Monomymous maker Michael has designed an up to date model of his Epic Minimalist Leisure System, EMES — a tiny handheld console with interchangeable recreation cartridges, now that includes a {custom} LED matrix show.
“I made a decision to experiment with my very own custom-made LED matrix show, for the reason that [Plessey] GPD340 show is mainly pure high-grade unobtanium,” Michael explains of the challenge’s shift in design, “and 10×7 decision could be very limiting for gaming capabilities. So I designed a 15×10 matrix out of 0201 LEDs. The ensuing dimensions of the show space is 15 by 10mm [around 0.59×0.39″] with diagonal of ~0.7″.”
The tiny {custom} LED matrix is designed to switch the classic Plessey GPD340 micro-LED show used within the console’s authentic incarnation, unveiled by Michael final 12 months. The brand new show is pushed by an Lumissil IS31FL3743A LED driver, whereas the center of the machine stays unchanged: a Microchip ATtiny10, an eight-but 8MHz microcontroller chip one would not usually affiliate with a video games console, with simply 32 bytes of RAM and 1kB of program flash.
The redesigned baseboard places 4 management buttons both facet of the tiny show board, and a cartridge slot above it. On the rear is a magnetic buzzer — which shares a pulse-width modulated (PWM) output with the LED matrix, switching down from an inaudible >20kHz frequency to audible pitches when required — and a connection for an influence provide board that homes a 90mAh battery and a USB Kind-C charging port.
